Saponin
This chemical is refined from the tea seed(camellia seed). Camellia seeds contain rich tea saponin, which can be extracted from virgin camellia oil or tea seed cake with special organic solvent.
Saponins are glycosides of steroids, steroid alkaloids (steroids with a nitrogen function) or triterpenes found in plants, especially in the plant skins where they form a waxy protective coating. Saponins are natural surfactants, or detergents. They dissolve in water to form a stable soapy froth; this is thought to be due to their amphiphilic nature. The word Sapon means soap, referring to the permanent froth saponins make on being mixed with water.
However, camellia saponinâs basic structure is composed by sapogenin (C30H50O6), aglycon and organic acid, which is a kind of pentacyclic triterpene ***** molecular formula is C57H90O26, molar weight is 1191.28. Pure tea saponin is colorless, minute columnar crystalloid. Melting point is 223ï½224â(433.4ï½435.2â). Can be easily dissolved in hydrous methanol, hydrous ethanol, ethanol, n-butylalcohol, glacial acetic acid, acetic anhydride, pyridine and other organic solvent, but can not be dissolved in ether, chloroform, acetone and so on.
