Aluminum Chloride Hexahydrate Grade 1

Aluminum chloride, hexahydrate.

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate [********6].

Assay: *8% minimum AlCl3 on dry basis.

Water: between *2.0% and *8.0%.

Sulfate— The addition of 0.2 mL of barium chloride TS to *0 mL of a solution (1 in **0) produces no turbidity within 1 minute.

Limit of alkalies and alkaline earths— To a boiling solution of 1.0 g in **0 mL of water add a few drops of methyl red TS, then add 6 N ammonium hydroxide until the color of the solution just changes to a distinct yellow. Add hot water to restore the volume to **0 mL, and filter while hot.

Evaporate *5 mL of the filtrate to dryness, and ignite to constant weight: the weight of the residue does not exceed 2.5 mg (0.5%).

Heavy metals, Method —  the limit is 0.**2%.

Iron — 0.**1%.

DEFINITION

Content: *5.0 per cent to **1.0 per cent.

CHARACTERS

Appearance: White or slightly yellow, crystalline powder or colourless crystals, deliquescent.

Solubility: Very soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (*6 per cent), soluble in glycerol.

IDENTIFICATION

A. Dilute 0.1 ml of solution S2 (see Tests) to 2 ml with water. The solution gives reaction of chlorides.

B. Dilute 0.3 ml of solution S2 to 2 ml with water. The solution gives the reaction of aluminium.

TESTS

Solution S1: Dissolve *0.0 g in distilled water and dilute to **0 ml with the same solvent.

Solution S2: Dilute *0 ml of solution S1 to **0 ml with water.

Appearance of solution: Solution S2 is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution.

Sulphates: Maximum **0 ppm, determined on solution S1.

Iron: Maximum *0 ppm, determined on solution S1.

Alkali and alkaline-earth metals: Maximum 0.5 per cent.

Heavy metals: Maximum *0 ppm.

Water: *2.0 per cent to *8.0 per cent, determined on *0.0 mg.

ASSAY

Dissolve 0.**0 g in *5.0 ml of water. Carry out the complexometric titration of aluminium. Titrate with 0.1 M zinc sulphate until the colour of the indicator changes from greyishgreen to pink. Carry out a blank titration. 1 ml of 0.1 M sodium edetate is equivalent to *4.*4 mg of AlCl3,6H2O.

Aluminum Chloride USP Grade

AlCl3·6H2O *- **1.*3 *- [********6].

Aluminum Chloride contains not less than *5.0 percent and not more than **2.0 percent of AlCl3, calculated on the anhydrous basis.

Identification: A solution (1 in *0) responds to the tests for Aluminum and for Chloride.

Water: Between *2.0% and *8.0%.
