Introducing the sulfobutylether (SBE) into beta cyclodextrin can produce materials with different degrees of substitution, theoretically from 1 to *1; the hepta-substituted preparation (SBE*-b-CD) is the cyclodextrin with the most desirable drug carrier properties.
