Cascara Sagrada Bark Extract

Synonyms: Cascara Buckthorn Bark Extract; Rhamni Purshianae Cortex Extract; sacred bark
Latin Name: Rhamnus purshiana (D.C.).

Description: Cascara sagrada is a natural laxative made from the reddish-brown bark of a tree (Rhamnus purshiana) native to the Pacific Northwest. It was used by various Native American tribes, who also passed their "sacred bark" on to Spanish explorers (cascara sagrada means sacred bark in Spanish).
Today, numerous over-the-counter laxatives feature cascara sagrada as a key ingredient. Because it's so mild, the herb is frequently combined with stronger laxatives, such as aloe vera latex. To work properly, the bark must be carefully prepared*-cured for at least one year or heated and dried to speed up the aging process. Aging is essential because the fresh bark is very irritating to the gastrointestinal system, causing vomiting and intestinal spasms.

Active Ingredient: Cascara bark contains: ***0% of a complex mixture of anthraquinone glycosides of which ****0% are cascarosides A, B, C, D, E, and F, ****0% are aloins A and B with chrysaloins A and B and ****0% are anthroquinone O-glycosides and free anthraquinones including: aloe-emodin, frangula emodin, iso-emodin, chrysophanol and physcion. The bark also contains resins, tannins and lipids. Cascarosides A and B are alooin O- and C-glycosides) and cascarosides C and D are deoxyaloin O- and C-glycosides. The bark also contains barbaloin and O-glycosides of emodin (e.g. frangulin), emosin oxanthrone and palmidin A, B, and C (also found in Rhubarb Root). The bark also contains linoleic acid, myristic acid and syringic acid.

Cautions:
Don't use cascara sagrada continuously for more than two weeks.
See your doctor if constipation lasts for more than one week.
Never ingest fresh cascara bark, which is extremely irritating and can cause severe vomiting. The bark must be stored for a year or more and be specially treated before it's safe to use. Instead, stick with standardized commercial cascara products (capsules, tablets, powders).
Avoid cascara sagrada if you have an inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, or if your doctor has diagnosed an intestinal obstruction of any kind.  Unless your doctor recommends it, don't take cascara sagrada if you are pregnant or breast-feeding; its effects on the fetus and infant are unclear.

Dosage
• Suggested Amount:
The daily dosage with tea is **2g of cut or powdered aged bark yielding ****0mg hydroxyanthracene derivates, calculated as cascaroside. To make a tea: Pour boiling water over **2 g of finely chopped Cascara bark, steep *0 minutes and then strain. 1 Teaspoon = 2.5 g. Average daily dose is *****0 mg hydroxyanthracene derivatives. The bark takes about 6 to 8 hours to work after ingestion and should not be used for more than a few days at a time unless otherwise prescribed. Only aged drug should be used. Anthrones found in the fresh bark will irritate the stomach and may cause vomiting, colic, and bloody diarrhea.
