CNC Machining Surface Finishes

As Machined:

Without any surface treatment processing methods, the parts will leave visible tool marks and burrs, which can be completed quickly and cost-saving. This is the most popular and cost efficient way for inner functional components. Fine and even tool path is also good for aspect parts.



Bead Blasted:

A surface treatment process to obtain a certain degree of cleanliness and different roughness on the surface of the workpiece. The surface after sandblasting is dull and matt.



Anodizing:

Usually refers to the process of forming a layer of oxide film on aluminum products, in order to overcome the defects of aluminum alloy surface hardness and wear resistance. Many colors(such as black, red,blue etc.)are available. Divided into Type II (normal) and Type III (hard), Type III is usually thicker than Type II and more corrosion resistant.



Powder Coat:

The plastic powder is adsorbed to the surface of the workpiece by electrostatic spraying to form a powdery coating, and then the powder layer is cured by heating and baking to level it into a uniform film layer.It usually used for appearance parts and a variety of colors are available.



Electroplate

1. Galvanizing: Mainly to make the surface more beautiful and rust free.

2. Chrome plating:It can make the metal products more durable. Hard chrome plating is mainly applied for machinery which under high temperature conditions, such as molds. Decorative chrome plating is mainly to make the surface brighter and more beautiful in appearance.

3. Nickel plating: It is deposited on the metal surface by oxidation-reduction effect, which is used to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and increase beauty and glossy.

4. Titanium plating: preventing pollution, and will not cause allergic reactions in contact with the human body. Because the titanium compound has a variety of colors, it can increase the aesthetic effect. Meanwhile, titanium has the function of anti-acid, anti-alkali and anti-oxidation.

5. Silver plating: There are two main functions, one is decoration and the other is functionality. Decorative silver plating are used for oxidation resistance experiments. Functionality is mainly used in the electronics industry, such as electrodes, wires, electric shocks, pole pieces, and so on.

6. Gold Plating: is a method of depositing a thin layer of gold on the surface of another metal (most commonly copper or silver) through chemical or electrochemical plating.



Heat Treatment

Metal heat treatment is one of the important processes in mechanical manufacturing. By comparison with other treatment processes, heat treatment generally does not change the shape and the chemical composition of the whole workpiece, whereas it improves the performance of the workpiece by changing the internal microstructure or the surfaces chemical composition.



Polishing

Polishing is the finishing process of reduction of surface roughness to create a bright and smooth surface by mechanical, chemical or electrochemical action. It uses polishing tools and abrasive particles or other polishing material to enhance the visual appeal of the workpiece.

What is CNC machining?

CNC machining is a manufacturing technique for removing material. It uses sharp cutting tools, available in a variety of shapes and sizes, which are precisely controlled by a computer. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control.



How CNC machining works

CNC machining starts with a computer, on which designers prepare a part using CAD (Computer-aided Design) software. This digital part is then converted into a format that can be recognized by a CNC machine.



Instructions are sent to the CNC machine in the form of  G-Code after which the machine can start cutting.



Most CNC machines have a worktable and work holding device to keep a block of material — known as the workpiece — in place. The worktable may or may not move, depending on the style of the machine.



When machining starts, the cutting tool makes contact with the workpiece, cutting away layers of material. The tool and/or workpiece is moved and/or rapidly rotated according to the G-Code instructions so that cuts are made in exactly the right places until the part is finished.



Different types of CNC machine

CNC machines include CNC mills, CNC turning machines (or lathes), CNC routers, and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machines.



CNC mills have rotating cutting tools that are moved to different areas of the workpiece to make cuts and can be used to make many different pats. CNC lathes work the other way, rotating the workpiece against a stationary cutting tool, and are used to make cylindrical parts.



CNC routers are similar to CNC mills, but have less power and cannot cut the hardest materials. They can, however, be faster than CNC mills.



EDM uses electrical discharges (sparks) instead of a sharp cutting tool to cut material. No physical contact is made between the tool and the workpiece.



CNC machines are often defined by their number of axes. More axes mean they can move their tool and/or workpiece in a greater number of ways, giving greater cutting flexibility and the ability to make more complex parts in a shorter time.
