DENSÄ°TY INDEX MEASUREMENT IN MOLTEN ALUMINUM

 

The density level is an indicator of the cleanliness of liquid aluminum, ie; the content of dissolved hydrogen gas and oxide, and thus the quality of the metal. The gas level measurement instrument expose the liquid aluminum metal to vacuum; allow the dissolved hydrogen in the metal to form gas bubles and to form voids in the sample when solidified.

The higher the concentration of oxide and inclusions in the liquid metal, the easier it is for dissolved hydrogen to evolve in the form of gas. The measured density of the sample is an indicator of the level of oxide and inclusion as much as the hydrogen gas in the liquid metal.

The density level, called Density Index, is the ratio of difference between densities of the sample solidified under vacuum and the sample solidified under atmospheric pressure to the density of the sample solidified under atmospheric pressure.

It is used to determine the quality of liquid metal and especially the efficiency of gas and oxide removal in molten aluminum.
