Corn, Zea mays, derives its name from the Arawak mahizi which
literally means „that which sustains life.‟ii The name corn was
added by the Europeans who referred to all small-seeded cereal
grains as corn; they used the term „Indian Corn‟ when referring
to this American grain denoting its connection with the Native
