Harmonics are electric voltages and currents that appear on the electric power system as a result of non-linear electric loads. Harmonic frequencies in the power grid are a frequent cause of power quality problems. Harmonic components should be reduced as much as possible.
 

~~Power Quality Primer

Today’s power grid is inefficient at best. Depending on the types of loads in your system and the level of power quality provided by your utility, ALL users of electric power suffer from the following conditions to some degree:

1. Harmonic Distortion

Harmonic distortion is created by specific loads such as switching power supplies (on computers, for example) AC motor drives and fluorescent lighting. In recent years, large numbers of these devices have been installed in most facilities. Harmonic distortion can create overheating in motor windings (making them consume more power) and will make any system run less efficiently. Additionally, power present in the harmonics cannot be productively used by the system and thus represents wasted energy.

2. Phase Imbalance

In three-phase systems, it is common for one phase to be more loaded than the others. It is common, for example, for single-phase power outlets and lighting to all be configured to run on one leg of a three-phase system, overloading that particular leg relative to the others. This condition results in less-efficient power utilization.

3. Peak Inrush Current

Most electrical devices draw extra electric current when starting. Although this inrush is brief, it can increase costs for power and infrastructure. Utilities are increasingly charging a “Demand Charge” based on the highest peak current during the month. These charges may run as high as a third of the total bill.

4. Voltage Sag Correction

Voltage sags occur when the actual voltage in a system is less than the expected amount. This causes motors and other devices to draw more current than normal and operate less efficiently.

5. Power Factor Degradation

Power factor is degraded with the presence of inductive loads (motors, pumps, HVAC) in the system. Phase shifting occurs between the current and voltage waveforms in an AC system which creates inefficiencies.

In any given system the conditions described above can represent a potential savings opportunity of *1% to *0%, depending upon the severity of each individual condition. The key concept relative to the EPIC is that it is designed to address ALL of these conditions in any power system where it is properly installed.
