Groundnuts are a staple crop in Western Kenya, and Uganda. Millions
of people depend on them as a food source, and a central ingredient
in the local cuisine.
Groundnut production in Western Kenya reaches several thousands of
tons each year.
The groundnuts are cultivated by traditional means, without
chemical pesticides. During the growing period, usually some
fertilizer is added in the Lake Victoria plains, and no fertilizer
is needed in the slopes of the nearby Mt. Elgon, due to very
fertile soils.
Groundnuts are harvested in April and November.
Groundnuts are sold raw, for food processors.
