These bags of palm come from Chilapa de Alvarez in the state of Guerrero

The production of handicrafts with soyate palm is a key activity for the economic development of the indigenous women of this population.

The role they have as support for their families has motivated them to perfect the knowledge that was transmitted to them by their grandmothers, to extract the palm of the woody plant soyate (Brahea dulcis) and to make a variety of typical crafts of that state.

In order to elaborate palm handicrafts, it is necessary to know the traditional technique of cultivation of the soyate plant, which is transmitted from generation to generation.

The palm is considered a common good in Guerrero, it is produced in a wild way, it takes advantage of the leaves called velilla that measure between *0 and *0 centimeters long.

The growth of the palms occurs mostly in the rainy season, in the months of June to September and its collection is carried out throughout the year.

The palm is boiled and dried, this process takes several days to convert it from green to white and has the flexibility to work. After the fibers are subjected to a process of stoving and had which consists of immersing them in a mixture of water, oxalic acid and hyposulfite at a temperature of *0 degrees.

Later they are accommodated by heaps inside the stoving room and sulfur is burned at a temperature of **0 degrees, the room is closed and sealed with newspaper, then placed in the sun for two hours. In this way the fiber is ready to make bags and other items.
