Heart fatty acid binding protein (HFABP, also known as FABP3)
Heart fatty acid binding protein (HFABP, also known as FABP3) is composed of **2 amino acids with a molecular weight of *5 kDa. It is one of the richest proteins in the heart. HFABP combines two fatty acid molecules and participates in the transport of fatty acyl coenzyme A, which is active in the oxidation process, thus generating energy in mitochondria.
Heart fatty acid binding protein (HFABP) is a new type of cytoplasmic protein rich in the heart. It is highly heart specific (i.e. mainly expressed in heart tissue), but also in low concentrations in tissues other than the heart. After myocardial ischemic injury, HFABP can be found in the blood as early as **3 hours after the onset of chest pain, peaked at **8 hours, and the plasma level returned to normal within ****0 hours. Therefore, HFABP is regarded as a useful biomarker for early diagnosis of myocardial injury.
The elevated level of free plasma myoglobin is widely accepted as a marker of early myocardial injury, and it has been proved that the elevated level of plasma myoglobin is superior to that of CK-MB and cTnT in eliminating acute myocardial infarction (AMI) within **6 hours after symptom onset. But HFABP is more heart specific, and because of its biological characteristics, it is considered to be a more accurate diagnostic test.
In addition, human HFABP can be used as a good biomarker with high sensitivity and detection rate for detecting myocardial infarction.
