• Hypophosphorous acid (also known as phosphinic acid in English)
is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H_{3}PO_{2}.
2. Physical and Chemical Properties
• Appearance: Pure hypophosphorous acid is a colorless oily
liquid or deliquescent crystals. Commonly seen is its *0% aqueous
solution, which is a colorless and transparent liquid.
• Melting Point: The melting point of the pure product is
*6.5^{circ}C.
• Boiling Point: **7.8^{circ}C (decomposition).
• Density: The relative density (compared with water = 1) is 1.*9
(for the pure product). It is easily soluble in hot water,
ethanol, and ether, and can also be dissolved in cold water.
• Acid-base Property: It is a monobasic weak acid, partially
ionizing hydrogen ions in aqueous solution.
• Chemical Stability: When heated to **0^{circ}C, it decomposes
into orthophosphoric acid and phosphine (PH_{3}, highly toxic).
It has a relatively strong reducing property and can react with
many oxidizing agents.
3. Applications
• Electroplating Industry: It is used in electroless nickel
plating. It can provide the electrons required for the reduction
of nickel ions, causing the nickel ions to deposit on the surface
of the object to be plated, forming a uniform nickel coating,
which has good corrosion resistance and wear resistance.
• Pharmaceutical Field: It participates in some drug synthesis
reactions as a reducing agent. For example, in the preparation
process of certain organophosphorus compounds
