The Method of Use
1.***1 steel has been pre-hardened to ******0HB(****6HRC), which can be used directly for mold making and process. It also has the characteristics of good dimensional stability. Just Pre-hardened steel can meet the needs of the industry. The die life can reach *0W mode times.

Stress Relieving

Preheating: Because mold steel 1.***1 steel plate is sold in a pre-hardened condition, hardening heat treatment is not necessary. After machining and intermittently during service, the steel must be thermally stress relieved by heating to **0ºF (**2ºC), equalizing and holding for one hour per inch (*5.4mm) of thickness, and cooling in air to ambient temperature.

In those rare circumstances where the AISI steel P*0 must be re-hardened, the steel must first be annealed prior to hardening.

Hardening

Critical Temperature: Ac1: ***5ºF (**3ºC)

Preheating of P*0 metal: Heat at a rate not exceeding **0ºF per hour (**2ºC per hour) to ********0ºF (******7ºC) and equalize.

Austenitizing (High Heat)

Heat rapidly from the preheat to ***0ºF (**3°C). Soak for *0 minutes for first inch (*5.4mm) of thickness, plus *5 minutes for each additional inch (*5.4mm).

Quenching

Pressurized gas, or interrupted oil to ******5ºF (****1ºC).
For oil, quench until black, at about **0°F (**2°C), then cool in still air to ******5°F (****1°C).

Tempering

1.***1 tool steels are tempered at ******3°C (**0 to ***0°F) for a Rockwell C hardness of *7 to *8.

Annealing

Annealing for AISI P*0 tool steels takes place at ******8°C (***0 to ***0°F) and then the steels are cooled slowly in the furnace at a temperature less than 4°C (*0°F) per hour.

1.***1 Tool Steel Forging
1.***1 steel plate and round bars materials are forged at ***3°C (***0°F) down to **9°C (***0°F). Forging below **1°C (***0°F) is not recommended for these steels P*0 material.
