About Natural White Sesame Seeds Sesame seeds were brought to the United States from Africa during the late *7th century. Currently, the largest commercial producers of sesame seeds include India, China and Mexico. Sesame seeds are tiny, flat oval seeds with a nutty taste and a delicate, almost invisible crunch. They come in a host of different colours, depending upon the variety, including white, yellow, black and red. White Sesame Seeds from Gujarat state is widely preferred due to its uniform colour and bold size. Description Sesame seed consist of whole dried seed from the plant Sesamum Indicum L. The colour is whitish. Odor and taste is typical, product specific. Free from foreign odor and taste, such as mustiness or rancidity. They are highly valued for their high content of sesame oil, oil that is very resistant to rancidity. They are the main ingredients in tahini and the Middle Eastern sweet treat, halvah. The harvesting season starts form the end of September up to November end. Prime season for sesame seeds is between September and April when the new crops are harvested. Uses These seeds are largely served in bakery products such as breads, bread sticks, cookies, candies, pasta, vegetables & curry dishes. The toasted variety of natural white sesame seeds are used in chocolate, ice-cream and halva. Phytosterols are compounds found in plants that have a chemical structure very similar to cholesterol, and when present in the diet in sufficient amounts, are believed to reduce blood levels of cholesterol, enhance the immune response and decrease risk of certain cancers.
