W**8 is a compound in a series of *2 substances (named W*1 to W**2) that were first synthesized in academic research by Edward Knaus, Brent Warren, and Theodore Ondrus at the University of Alberta in ***1. The researchers were working on analgesic drug discovery in the ***0s and this chemical compound appeared as a designer drug in the ***0s. The W stands for Brent Warren, one of the researchers.

Unlike initially reported, W**8 and its metabolites do not bind to opioid receptors. W**8 was found to obtain weak activity at both sigma receptors and the translocator protein (peripheral ben.zod receptor). It also inhibits hERG binding, an important antitarget in drug discovery, which possibly causes cardiovascular side-effects.
