Ocimum basilicumLinn. alone is cultivated in our farm on a commercial Scale.
The active constituents present in the oil obtained from flowers, and other parts are Linalool *0% methyl clavicol *- *6%, eugonol.****2 per cent. The oil is extensively used in several European countries and USA for flavouring of food- stuffs, confectionery goods, condiments and in other products.

Various uses are attributed to different parts of the plant in indigenous system of medicine and homeopathy. Thus an infusion of the plant is used for cephalalgia, gouty joints, and as a gargle for foul breath. The juice obtained from the leaves, gives relief in irritation of throat, earache, and ringworm. Seeds are used internally in constipation and piles. Leaf juice is a domestic remedy for infantile cough, bronchitis, catarrh, dysentery, and a diarrhoea. Infusion of leaves is given in malaria, in gastric diseases of children, and hepatic infections. Tulsi is widely used as a specific for all kinds of fevers.
