Palladium is a precious metal of a white color, one of the
platinum group metals (PGMs). Palladium is truly precious as one of
the rarest metals on earth; it is relatively scarce even among the
precious metals: the annual palladium production is *0 times less
than annual production of gold. The metal is mined in a limited
number of regions from ores containing other platinum group metals
such as platinum, iridium, rhodium and ruthenium. Over *0% of its
deposits are located in Russia, Republic of South Africa, Zimbabwe,
USA and Canada.
Palladium is remarkable for its ability to absorb big volumes of
hydrogen and its high catalytic activity. The metal is highly
conductive, malleable, ductile and corrosion resistant. It does not
tarnish in air and as a biocompatible metal doesnt oxidize in the
human body.
Uses
More than half of the world's palladium is used for manufacturing
exhaust catalytic converters, with most of it found in cars with
gasoline engines. In chemical industry palladium containing
catalysts are used in production of a wide range of chemical
products, such as nitric acid, fertilizers, margarine, Teflon and
nylon. Petrochemical industry uses palladium as a catalyst in
producing gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and lubricating oils. Apart
from the fact that palladium is an excellent catalyst, it combines
the properties of high electrical conductivity and corrosion
resistance. Production of contacts and connectors is another
popular application of the metal. Ceramic capacitors and
organic light emitting diodes containing palladium are widely used
in industrial and consumer electronics, including such popular
products as laptops, tablet devices, cell phones and smartphones.
In jewelry industry palladium is used as a whitening ingredient in
white gold alloys and in pure state in manufacturing jewelry and
watches of high grade palladium. Palladium is part of dentures,
bridges and materials for tooth fillings. Palladium is inextricably
linked to the development of hydrogen energy industry: the metal is
characterized by the ability to absorb hydrogen in large quantities
and is one of the key materials used in hydrogen production and
storage technologies.
