Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a specific marker of prostate cancer.
PSA is of great significance in the diagnosis of early asymptomatic prostate cancer. Under normal circumstances, PSA is a serine protease secreted by prostatic epithelial cells, which is a glycoprotein and secreted directly into the prostatic ductal system. Its normal function is to help the semen clot hydrolyze and liquefy, which is related to male fertility. There is a barrier between blood and epithelium around the normal prostatic duct system, which prevents PSA produced by prostatic epithelium from entering the blood directly, thus maintaining the low concentration of PSA in the blood. It is generally believed that serum PSA less than 4.0 ng / ml is normal, and PSA more than *0 ng / ml increases the risk of precancerous adenocarcinoma. At present, the barrier between the blood and the epithelium is destroyed when the cancer occurs, and there are more PSA secreted by the cancer. As a result, PSA directly enters the blood. The higher the malignancy of the cancer, the greater the damage to the normal prostate tissue, and the higher the PSA in the serum.
