QUENCHING AND STRIPPING SYSTEMS
ATP Environment quenching systems are designed for evaporative water cooling of the gas stream.
Materials of construction for the quencher section include Hastelloy and **6L to **4 stainless steel.
Hot gases are often cooled to near the saturation level.
If not cooled, the hot gas stream can evaporate a large portion of the scrubbing liquor,
adversely affecting collection efficiency and damaging scrubber internal parts.
If the gases entering the scrubber are too hot, some liquid droplets
may evaporate before they have a chance to contact pollutants in the exhaust stream,
and others may evaporate after contact, causing captured particles to become re entrained.
In some cases, quenching can actually save money.
Cooling the gases reduces the temperature and, therefore, the volume of gases,
permitting the use of less expensive construction materials and a smaller scrubber vessel and fan.
Wastewater (industrial as well as municipal waste water) often contains high concentrations of ammonia.
To remove the ammonia out of the wastewater, the air stripping of ammonia water is a proven technology.
The ammonia or NH3 is first stripped from the wastewater in the stripping tower.
The equipment used for this stripping process is similar to that of the gas scrubbing technology:
an NH3 stripping tower is a packed column similar to those used for chemical gas scrubbing.
The preheated ammonia-laden water enters the stripper on top,
a counter-flow gas stream comes in from the bottom of the stripper tower.
NaOH is added to obtain a correct pH value, which will allow the ammonia to be dissociated or stripped from the water.
The treated water will be collected at the bottom of the stripper;
the now ammonia-laden gasses leave the stripping tower at the top, for further treatment in the NH3 absorber.
