Semaglutide

Semaglutide is a GLP*1 receptor agonist, which means that it mimics the action of the human intestinal glucagon-like peptide*1 (GLP*1), thereby increasing insulin secretion, increasing blood glucose disposal and improving glycaemic control. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and constipation.
Somalutide can be used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
High-dose somalutide formulations may be used as an adjunct to diet and exercise for long-term weight management in adults who are obese (initial body mass index (BMI) ≥ *0 kg/m2) or overweight (initial BMI ≥ *7 kg/m2) and have at least one weight-related comorbidity.
A review of anti-obesity treatment found that somalutide and tesipatide (with overlapping mechanisms of action) were more promising than previous anti-obesity drugs, although less effective than bariatric surgery.
