Commercial grades of titanium dioxide are rarely pure. Most consist in multilayer inorganic structures with a TiO2 core. In some cases, an organic treatments is deposited on the surfaces of the TiO2 particles to improve compatibility and dispersability. The number and the nature of the layer combined with a controlled particle size distribution are parameters differentiating a grade from an other. It is then possible to control optical properties (Opacity, undertone) or performances such as dispersability, processability or durability.
