Flood Warning System Overview
The Flood Warning System is made up of three components ; A range of flood sensors which pass their status using a low power radio transmitter, a data hub which gathers the data from multiple probes, filters alarms then sends them to the final component, a web site which displays the status of the various sensors and data hubs.
Sensors
The Flood Warning Sensors are specific to the application. The two sensors shown here, for example are used to monitor domestic gullies and main line sewers. The domestic gully sensor watches for both flooding and dry gullies. It also has a light sensor which can detect when a gully grate is blocked from above. The other sensor has its radio transmitter in the road surface and the probe mounted under a manhole. This probe sends back four levels of flood data, typically set at half sewer capacity, sewer surcharging, manhole half full, manhole full (sewage at road surface). Other sensors are available, or can easily be developed from other variants.
Data Hub
The Flood Warning Data Hub is typically mounted on a lamp post or other street furniture. The hub receives transmissions from the sensors then analyses the data. If an alarm condition is detected, then the system can be set to immediately send this information to the web server. The system can be battery powered with up to two years operation without the need to change or recharge the batteries.
