Ozone has been used for many different applications since first discovered. It is most widely used in water treatment for killing microorganisms and purifying the water. Because ozone does not form harmful chlorine compounds, nor does it remain in the water after treatment, all bottled waters and some municipal drinking water systems use ozone to kill bacteria instead of chlorine. Once treated, ozone leaves no taste or odor in drinking water. Due to its great deodorizing and disinfecting abilities, ozone is also approved by the FDA to be used in food processing plants to scrub yeast and mold spores from the air; kill bacteria on food or on contact services; and ozonated water is used to wash fresh fruits and vegetables to kill yeast, mold and bacteria.

Ozonated water is used to launder clothes and to sanitize food, drinking water, and surfaces in the home. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is "amending the food additive regulations to provide for the safe use of ozone in gaseous and aqueous phases as an antimicrobial agent on food, including meat and poultry."

Studies at California Polytechnic University demonstrated that 0.3 μmol/mol levels of ozone dissolved in filtered tap water can produce a reduction of more than *9.*9% in such food borne

microorganisms as salmonella, E. coli ***7:H7, and Campylobacter. This quantity is *0,**0 times the WHO recommended limits stated above. Ozone can be used to remove pesticide residues from fruits and vegetables.

Ozone is used in homes and hot tubs to kill bacteria in the water and to reduce the amount of chlorine or bromine required by reactivating them to their free state.
