The Doppler current meter 4420/4830 is a single point current meter
that is mainly used for integration into the Andra Sea Defender
platform for both scientific and commercial use. The 4830 measures
temperature in addition to ocean currents. The 4420/4830 has both
AiCaP and RS-232 outputs, with AiCaP when integrated into the Sea
Guard platform and RS-232 output when used alone. The current meter
is also available in two other models, 4420R/4830R, which can be
connected to longer cables for use alone, RS-422 output, and cannot
be integrated into the Sea Guard platform.
The Doppler current meter 4420/4830 uses the backscatter acoustic
Doppler principle, which has two orthogonal sensor axes with two
sensors on each axis, so that two-way measurements can be made on
each axis, which is a big advantage of the sensor, which makes the
sensor measurement insensitive to interference from eddy currents
around the sensor (forward measurement is enabled). When the
forward measurement function is enabled, only one sensor on each
axis simultaneously sends acoustic pulses and receives acoustic
pulse reflections from the particles, thus measuring the orthogonal
velocity components of the X and Y axes and obtaining the
horizontal velocity components after tilt compensation. Through the
measurement of the X and Y axis velocity vector and the orientation
of the built-in solid state electronic compass, the north and east
velocity components are calculated, and the output flow rate and
direction are obtained after multiple measurements.
The Doppler current meter 4420/4830 adopts ZPulse technology. The
advantage of ZPulse technology is that it can improve the
measurement accuracy. The complex acoustic pulse technology
contains different frequencies in a single pulse, divides the
received signal into different frequency bands, and each frequency
band is transmitted to the processor as a pulse signal. The change
of Doppler frequency is analyzed by using high-speed digital
processor and ARMA parameter model algorithm. This multi-frequency
technique reduces the number of pings while achieving the desired
accuracy. The measurement accuracy of the instrument is inversely
proportional to the number of pings, whereas the Zpuls technology
uses two frequencies, and the number of pings is reduced to half
that of a single frequency to achieve the same accuracy compared to
a single frequency.
The Doppler current meter 4420/4830 is ideal for monitoring
low-velocity water without moving particles, and because the
measuring area is 0.4 to 1.0m away from the instrument, the impact
of pollution and turbulence is minimal.
