Sisal When METL’s investment in agriculture started, the focus was exclusively on sisal. Since then the company has acquired *0 sisal estates (including two sisal processing businesses – *1st Century Holdings Ltd a sisal spinning company based in Dar es Salaam, and TPM (***8) Ltd, a sisal bag manufacturing company in Morogoro and Moshi). As a consequence of these investments, METL has become Tanzania’s largest single sisal producer, contributing almost *0% of the country’s total sisal production. Of the *0, **0 Ha of land holding, about *5, **0 Ha of best suitable area has been allocated for sisal, and systematic replanting is going on in all of these sisal estates. METL aims to increase its sisal production to *5, **0 tons at full development. It is also envisaged that most of the fibre produced will be utilized locally in the Group companies, while a part of the production will be exported. METL is also looking for opportunities to diversify sisal business in the areas of sisal bio-gas, sisal pulp for paper industry, etc.
