Intended use This immunoassay kit allows for the specific measurement of human Vitamin B*2, VB*2 concentrations in cell culture supernates, serum and plasma. Introduction Vitamin B*2 is a member of the vitamin B complex. It contains cobalt, and so is also known as cobalamin. It is exclusively synthesised by bacteria and is found primarily in meat, eggs and dairy products. There has been considerable research into proposed plant sources of vitamin B*2. Fermented soya products, seaweeds, and algae such as spirulina have all been suggested as containing significant B*2. However, the present consensus is that any B*2 present in plant foods is likely to be unavailable to humans and so these foods should not be relied upon as safe sources. Many vegan foods are supplemented with B*2. Vitamin B*2 is necessary for the synthesis of red blood cells, the maintenance of the nervous system, and growth and development in children. Deficiency can cause anaemia. Vitamin B*2 neuropathy, involving the degeneration of nerve fibres and irreversible neurological damage, can also occur. Test principle This assay employs the quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay technique. A antibody specific for VB*2 has been pre-coated onto a microplate. Standards and samples are pipetted into the wells and any VB*2 present is bound by the immobilized antibody. An enzyme-linked antibody specific for VB*2 is added to the wells. Following a wash to remove any unbound antibody-enzyme reagent, a substrate solution is added to the wells and color develops in proportion to the amount of VB*2 bound in the initial step.
