the packing ring is housed into a groove. it can't be lost and in addtion , the groove prevents the seal from being radially extruded when the indicator is tightened 
this location of the packing ring allows also the use of a soft rubber which guarantees better and easier sealing . these oil leveler indicators are resistant to relative high pressure, test results on request.
