Specifications Aguacate de Uruapan,avocado,butter pear,abacate,avocatier The avocado, unflatteringly known in the past as alligator pear, midshipman's butter, vegetable butter, or sometimes as butter pear, and called by Spanish-speaking people aguacate, cura, cupandra, or palta; in Portuguese, abacate; in French, avocatier; is the only important edible fruit of the laurel family, Lauraceae.   When packed, avocados are sized into categories based upon the weight of an individual fruit. These sizes are named according to the number of fruit from each size category needed to fill a **-pound carton. Thus, a "size *8" avocado refers to the size category where *8 avocados placed in carton have a net weight of *5 pounds. Using this method, the larger the size designation, the smaller the fruit, i.e. a size *4 is smaller than size *2. As with maturity standards, the Avocado Inspection Service has the responsibility of monitoring the size of the individual fruit in each carton and, in addition, certifying that each carton of avocados weighs *5 pounds, plus or minus 0.5 pound. Official weights for each size category
