Gum Myrrh
 
Its called Myrrh ogadem or Malmaley
Oily gum resin exudate from stems or branches of C. myrrha
Colour variable from red, brown to dark brown
 
Gum myrrh refers to the sweet-smelling product that secretes from the bark of several species of Commiphora, A small tree native to the Horn of Africa especially Ethiopia and Somalia.
The resin hardens when exposed to the air, forming irregular shaped yellow or brown globules. The globules have a pleasant odor and a spicy, bitter flavor. Myrrh contains ****5 percent gum, ****5 percent resin (myrrhin), and **6 percent volatile oil (myrrhole), as well as bitter principles of undetermined composition.
 Uses of Gum Myrrh
 Aromatic resin that is burned as incense resin obtained from this plant is used in perfume, and medicine.

  • It is partially soluble in water, alcohol, and ether; used in dentifrices, perfumery, and pharmaceuticals.
  • It is also used as incense in religious rites and as a spice.
  •  It contains an antiseptic action that is used as a gargle (in the form of tinctures), for dressing wounds, and in the preparation of bandages and ointments
  • Local uses ink used in quranic schools, burn to repel snakes and insects, medicine
  • Commercial uses essential oil, cosmetics, flavours, medicines, antiseptics
