La Caobas en Bonitillo is a family run plantation consisting of 100% Honduran Mahogany trees (Swietenia macrophylla).
Swietenia macrophylla, commonly known as big leaf mahogany, is a species of plant in the Meliaceae family. It is one of two species that yields genuine mahogany timber. It is a deciduous tree which can reach 40 meters (sometimes up to 70 meters) in height, and can obtain a trunk diameter up to 3.5 meters. The usable branch-free part of the trunk can reach 25 meters in length. Their bark is bray-brown to reddish-brown with deep furrows. The inner bark has a reddish-brown to pink color. The long life, great dimensional stability, easy handling and high resistance to fungi and insects make it technically one of the best luxury woods.
For the past 25
years this species of trees has been in drastic decline due to
uncontrolled, over-logging. Today, all species Swietenia grown in
their native locations are listed by CITES, (Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species) and are therefore
protected under international conventions.
Because of this reason, this type of authentic wood has been very difficult to acquire legally in order to supply the luxury woods market for lavish apartments, hardwood flooring, customized furniture/doors, vehicle wood interiors, extravagance yacht building and world-renown guitars (e.g. Gibson).
LAS CAOBAS DE BONITILL
Las Caobas de Bonitillo
Las Caobas de Bonitillo originally started an experimental production of authentic Honduran Mahogany on the northern coast of Honduras in 1980. We initially acquired a 75-Acre plot of Honduran rainforest for initial mahogany plantation. Over the decades we have steadily increased the number of trees and land necessary to legally grow, and export Honduran Mahogany wood. We are already in the process of obtaining international certifications for export to the European markets and others. We have already acquired all Honduran government licenses and permits for cutting and exporting of this rare species, as we are one of the very few local producers who have actually planted all their trees.
