BME Concern, a UK registered
charity which delivers its projects in Africa under the name
Ripples in Africa, and currently operates
as Ripples Ghana, Ripples Cameroon and Ripples Nigeria.
Ripples supports over 5, **0 women in the 3 countries, giving them
a 'Hand-up', and not a
'Hand-out', offering training to help them to
work their way out of poverty. Ripples is expanding to more
African countries, but continue to be challenged by the lack of
funds to help these desperately poor African village
women.
The average village woman
has no access to basic amenities; no water, light or accessible
roads. They have ***4 children, with over *0% mortality
rate. Many children don’t make it to their 5th birthday. From
age 5, they walk **7 miles to fetch water, peddle/hawk to
contribute to the family income, and have to endure a 6 mile round
trip walk to go to School, to get educated.
The African village woman
live on less than a $1/day, has no access to capital, no help, and
most are the breadwinners for their families. These are very hard
working women, just surviving and trying to feed their children and
put them through school, against all these odds.
Our Charity supports the
African village women by offering them Micro-finance under
our Village Enterprise Programme, to set up
their own businesses. Giving them a ‘Hand-up, and not a
‘Hand-out’. Many women are skilled in managing on very
limited funds. With support and training from the Ripples
Business Team, they’re trained on skills to help them increase
their productivity, maintain standards and manage their receive.
Ripples village women run various businesses including the
production of Shea butter, Cocoa butter and Moringa
oil.
