Conservation of energy has become very important as energy costs continue to rise. Consequently, building energy conservation has emerged as a key area of research and development. The operation of buildings in the United States alone uses almost forty percent of the nations annual energy supply. Related information on Europes annual energy supply also show that building space heating and cooling demands about the same percentage of energy consumption. Many materials and applications have been used to insulate buildings. There have been some improvements in recent years as new materials are emerging with some having better insulating properties but with higher cost. A recent example is Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs). This is an effort to implement vacuumed space in thermal boundary walls for substantial insulation. Studies have shown that for the same thickness, the thermal resistance of an evacuated insulation is up to ten times better than conventional insulation materials such as fiberglass, polyurethane and polystyrene.

There are three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation, and if we remove most of the air molecules from a space—as occurs when we draw a vacuum—we largely eliminate the first two of those heat transfer mechanisms.

Conduction is the flow of heat from molecule to molecule. Its the reason a cast iron skillet handle heats up, but thermal conduction also occurs across a layer of air, as kinetic is transferred from one air molecule to the one next to it. If we remove most of those air molecules by creating a vacuum, there will far less conductive heat flow.

Convection is the transfer of heat by moving molecules from one place to another. Warm air rises, and these convection currents carry heat—for example, this is the primary means that heat is delivered to a room from baseboard convectors (often called radiators). In a vacuum there are far fewer air molecules so convection of heat nearly stops.

When looking to thermally upgrade the external fabric of the property traditional insulation types could potentially mean adding 150mm of PUR insulation to the exterior of the property. This approach could be problematic where there are space limitations. By adding such a thickness eaves details, guttering, downpipes, window reveals can all be problematic.

By utilising Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) these issues could be overcome. With a thermal conductivity value of 0.002W/mK (aged design value) VIPs could offer up to a 7-10 times reduction in insulation thickness compared with a traditional PUR solution.

Due to the nature of Vacuum Insulation Panel technology the key to an external wall insulation system is how to fix the VIPs in place without fixing through them and thus puncturing them. As the neighbouring details show a matrix of traditional insulation battens is first fixed in place to the exterior of the property. (Vacuum Panels are a made to measure product so a specific panel configuration can be designed for any property). These battens create openings for the VIPs to sit within and then a secondary layer of traditional insulation is laid over the top of the VIPs and fixed back through the underlying battens. This secondary layer offers a protection to the VIPs and also provides a bed for the final finish of the property such as a render system.
