When youre looking for the cost-is-no-object hardtail cross-country
race rig, a bike better than the pros ride, for every last bit of
marginal gain you can find, the Orbea Alma is the ride.
Orbea was an early adopter of big wheels. The Alma came as a *9er
as early as ***6. Theyve expanded the line to include the
slightly-smaller *7.5 wheel size as well. With the Small frames
exclusively equipped with *7.5 wheels, the Medium and Larges in
both *7.5 and *9 and the Extra Large in *9. In all cases, the
geometry has been tweaked to best utilize the wheel size chosen.
For those in the middle, use geometry, personal preferences, and
terrain to choose which wheel suits you best.
One of the keys to building a good hardtail is figuring out how to
have vertical compliance in the rear end without making the bike
noodly. Orbea does with their 4x4 concept. Its several little extra
angled frame members, found between the rear of the top tube and
rear of the chain stays, which adds vertical give without adding
any unwanted horizontal flex. They work with a narrow *7.2mm seat
post that allows for more comfort when seated and hides the Di2
battery. As the frame is a monocoque design with OMR carbon, the
shapes are easy to manipulate, and easy to get to do what Orbeas
engineers want.
