Waveplate (retarder or phase shifter) is an optical device that alters the polarization state of a light wave traveling through it. Waveplate works by shifting the phase of the light wave between two perpendicular polarization components. 
 
Waveplate is made from material of birefringent crystal with a carefully chosen thickness. The birefringent crystal has the ordinary and extraordinary axes. The velocities of light polarized along the two axes are different. This difference in velocities gives rise to a phase difference when the two beams recombine. In the case of an incident linearly polarized beam this is given by α=2πd(ne-no)/λ, where α is phase difference; d is thickness of waveplate; ne, no are refractive indexes of extraordinary and ordinary rays respectively; λ is wavelength. At any specific wavelength the phase difference is governed by the thickness. They are widely used in Circulator, Interleaver, Transceiver, DGE, DCE, etc.

1. Low Order Waveplate

2. Zero-Order Waveplate
It is constructed of two multi-order waveplates with their axis crossed. It performs as a zero-order waveplate because of the effect of two plates counteracting each other. It has wide temperature bandwidth and wavelength bandwidth properties.
 
3. True Zero-Order Waveplate
The true zero-order waveplate means that the thickness of waveplate is very thin(less than 0.1mm) which make the true zero-order waveplate excellent in temperature, wavelength and incident angle bandwidth.
 
4. Dual Wavelength Waveplate
It is a low order or multi-order waveplate, but which is suitable for two different wavelengths with different retardation.

The orientation of polarization of linearly polarized light will be rotatedat special angleby Quartz Crystal. The rotated angelis determined by the thickness of quartz crystal.
