STONE-AGE FIGURINES In ***2 a cache of unusual stones washed out of an Illinois cornfield. Spear points found with them suggest they were buried in the Stone-Age over *1,**0 years ago! These stones stack to make meaningful figurines - some extinct animals, others of human forms such as Shamans and Venuses. We also have a fine selection of arrowheads and Paleo-Indian tools from this recovery site. Please review this unique and rare collection at our website. Baby Mammoth A Fossils of mammoth have been found in Illinois. Yet at first it was hard for me to believe the River Owl encountered these beast on occasion. It's unlikely they hunted them as there were easier prey to take down that were large enough to feed a clan of people - not to mention all the fish and small game that were available. These 3 stones had me bewildered for about a year. At first I thought them to be an elk or bison, but elk and bison do not have long tails. So they ended up getting bagged and tagged "unknown" for 4 years. When we finally deduced the age of our find, it occurred to me to look for other animals - animals that went extinct about the time these stones were turned into art. I then noticed the head stone had been chipped a specific way - either by the river, or by the hand of man (the smoothness of the cut indicated it was probably done by the river). I wondered how long it took the ancient artists to find the trunk to this now extinct pachyderm. The trunk holds up the head stone from falling against the weight of the body stone - a unique way of stacking stones. Note the chocolate/caramel coloration matches these 3 stones perfectly and the tiny cell-like patterns in the stone look almost like elephant skin. Being mottled, it also looks as if the beast is shedding some of its wool. "Tortoise shell" chalcedony, 3 parts. 4.2"h x 7.0"L
